NM KIDS COUNT Data Book In the past year, New Mexico has seen some improvements in child well-being—especially regarding health. We’ve also seen troubling increases in other indicators over the short- and long-term. This annual report on child well-being presents data on indicators such as child and teen death rates, preschool enrollment, teen births, and more. Report A lawsuit currently working its way thought the New Mexico court system asserts that the state has failed to provide school funding sufficient for the education of all school-age children in the state, as required by the New Mexico constitution. This report supports those arguments.

It will take a comprehensive and focused set of strategies, and the political and public will to make them a reality, to improve child well-being in New Mexico. Report It’s not a coincidence that New Mexico’s lower rate of college-educated adults correlates with its higher rate of low-wage jobs - education and money are inexorably linked. Without supports, attaining a college education is out-of-reach for most low-income students. By creating a higher-paid workforce, making college more affordable for working families would benefit the state as a whole.
