The national 2023 KIDS COUNT Data Book, released annually by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, assesses and ranks the 50 states on 16 indicators of child well-being, which are categorized into four domains – economic well-being, education, health, and family and community. New Mexico placed 50th in 2023, however, long-term trends show many positive changes in child well-being. Due to challenges in data collection during the COVID pandemic, as well as changes in indicators and methodologies, this year’s rankings cannot be compared with past years. The data also do not reflect many state-level policy changes passed more recently that provide support for New Mexico children and families.
