EDDY COUNTY — For the third year in a row, New Mexico ranked 49 out of 50 states on child well-being, according to the 2016 KIDS COUNT report. The report, which consists of data from 2014, was released on Tuesday and is based on four categories – economic well-being, education, health and family and community.
New Mexico is “falling behind” on some key indicators according to a new report released this week. The annual KIDS COUNT report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation found that New Mexico ranks 50th in education and 49th in overall child well-being—again at or near the bottom of the list on key indicators for the state.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico, for the third year running, remained 49th out of 50 states for child well-being but did show some improvements, according to the latest Kids Count Data Book survey from the Annie E. Casey Foundation. “The biggest bright spot was our ranking in the health domain, which rose from 48th last year to 44th this year,” said Amber Wallin, MPA, the New Mexico Kids Count director.
The news out of the 2016 Kids Count Data Book shows New Mexico unchanged from last year in overall ranking of child well-being. The state remains at 49th out of 50, the third year it has ranked next-to-last, only coming in above Mississippi.
An annual data analysis that has come to be a state-by-state report card on the welfare of the nation’s children — and is often cited in New Mexico’s partisan battles over educational reform — again ranks New Mexico near the bottom, even dropping the state to last place when it comes to educational measures and the number of kids living in poverty.
