Editorial: High poverty takes toll on NM children

Things aren’t getting better for kids in New Mexico. That is the depressing but unmistakable conclusion from the release this week of the 2016 KIDS COUNT Data Book, an annual report on child well-being produced by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. For the third year in a row, New Mexico placed 49th, leading only Mississippi in the overall ranking.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- New Mexico's high poverty rate and staggering education statistics kept the state from improving its second-to-last place standing in the country for children, a report released Tuesday said. For the third consecutive year, New Mexico ranked 49th among states in the Annie E. Casey Foundation's annual Kids Count assessment.

NM still dismal for child well-being, but some progress

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico, for the third year running, remained 49th out of 50 states for child well-being but did show some improvements, according to the latest Kids Count Data Book survey from the Annie E. Casey Foundation. “The biggest bright spot was our ranking in the health domain, which rose from 48th last year to 44th this year,” said Amber Wallin, MPA, the New Mexico Kids Count director.

Some gains made, but New Mexico still 49th in child welfare

An annual data analysis that has come to be a state-by-state report card on the welfare of the nation’s children — and is often cited in New Mexico’s partisan battles over educational reform — again ranks New Mexico near the bottom, even dropping the state to last place when it comes to educational measures and the number of kids living in poverty.
