Southwest Women’s Law Center is presenting event at Farmington Civic Center

FARMINGTON — An Albuquerque-based nonprofit organization is planning a family game night and nonprofit resource fair here to provide a family-friendly atmosphere in which residents can connect with agencies that could help provide them support.
The Southwest Women’s Law Center is presenting the event Friday at the Farmington Civic Center as part of a $400,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, according to law clerk Jaclyn Page.
It’s part of a project called One Woman, One Case, Once A Year that has several objectives, including to train people to address community issues, including education, economic security, poverty and health care.
The goal is to help women and children achieve all opportunities available to them, Page said.
Page is a student at the University of New Mexico School of Law, which is one of the partners in the grant.
Four events statewide have been scheduled in conjunction with the grant, Page said. An event in Albuquerque took place Thursday evening, and events in Gallup and Las Cruces are scheduled for this week.
The locations were selected based on indicators including a county’s unemployment rate and the number of children living in poverty, Page said.
About 23.5 percent of children in San Juan County 17 years old and younger were living in poverty in 2015, according to data from the nonprofit New Mexico Voices for Children. The poverty rate for children 17 years old and younger statewide was 29 percent in 2015.

There are approximately 12 area nonprofit organizations scheduled to operate booths from which they will be sharing information about their services at Friday’s fair. The agencies include the Family Crisis Center, DNA Legal Services, Frontline Missions and Sexual Assault Services of Northwest New Mexico.
Page thought the fair would be a fun way to get families together to learn about the services area nonprofit agencies provide.
Free pizza will be offered, and a raffle will take place during the event. Some of the prizes include a gift card from the Blue Moon Diner and a painting from a local artist, Page said.
Children and parents can play a variety of board games, including Clue, Sorry and Monopoly.
There will be short presentations during the event, including a discussion with Farmington Mayor Tommy Roberts about the importance of nonprofit agencies in the community.
“We’re very appreciative of the nonprofits that provide those services in the Four Corners, especially Farmington,” Roberts said.
He hopes people who are dealing with issues can find agencies that will assist them or help them resolve their problems.
