Perhaps the most vilified population in the United States during the first Trump Administration were immigrants. This vilification is only rising.

Trump plans to declare a national emergency as a means to use military assets to prosecute mass deportations of undocumented immigrants, but state officials and local organizations are organizing a response.

Immigration advocacy groups Somos Un Pueblo Unido, El Centro de Igualidad y Derecho, The Santa Fe Dreamers Project, The Semilla Project and the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center held a press conference with New Mexico Speaker of the House Javier Martinez Nov. 22 at the State Capitol. They spoke about their work and what could come from a second Trump presidency regarding immigrants both documented and undocumented.

“I am blessed to sit in the Speaker’s chair, and it’s not lost on me that that comes with a great deal of responsibility,” Martinez said. “That’s why I will continue to fight alongside all of you to support New Mexico’s working families, and that includes our immigrant families.”
