Margo Moriarty on Friday welcomed 12 prospective clients to tour her Santa Fe day care center, HoliTomOli Holistic Arts Academy.
Next Friday, she plans to give tours to 12 more. From those families, only two students will be accepted into Moriarty’s center on Alto Street. The other 22 will have to look elsewhere for day care.
They are among thousands of New Mexico families struggling to find adequate child care both as a government shutdown looms and as temporary child care grants approved as part of the COVID-19 relief funding passed in 2021 are set to expire Saturday.
The state’s Head Start and Early Head Start programs should not be affected immediately should the government shut down, said Tommy Sheridan, deputy director of the National Head Start Association.
