Child advocacy group expands, diversifies board of directors
ALBUQUERQUE—New Mexico Voices for Children has added two new members to its Board of Directors. The new members further expand the Board's ethnic, geographic and generational diversity.
The new members are Conroy Chino and Mayra Franco Vasquez.
Mr. Chino, a member of Acoma Pueblo, works for the NATV Group, LLC, a consulting company dedicated to offering comprehensive political, business and strategic counsel to tribal governments. Prior to that, as the Secretary of Labor, he was the highest-ranking Native American in Governor Richardson's cabinet. Many New Mexicans, however, know him best from his Emmy-award winning work as a television news reporter and anchor, as well as for his work in the film industry.
Ms. Vasquez, as a 21-year-old student at Dona Ana Community College in Las Cruces, brings both a Southern New Mexico and a youth perspective to the Board. She was honored last year by NM Voices with an Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Award scholarship for her work in planning, designing and helping fund a Multipurpose Community Center in Chamberino, a small community south of Las Cruces. She has also worked with the Chamberino Youth Group's summer camp for younger kids, and done poverty relief work in Juarez, Mexico.
"We are extremely pleased to welcome Conroy and Mayra to our Board," said NM Voices Executive Director Eric Griego. "They both bring enthusiasm for improving the lives of children, a wide range of excellent skills and talents, and the perspectives of their unique backgrounds and communities
