Todd: Summer vacation is here. For some parents it’s a time where they worry about how to feed their kids. Reporter Sasha Lenninger shows us where they can get a free meal.

Sasha: New Mexico Voices for Children reports our state ranks highest in the nation when it comes to childhood poverty. Our community is coming together to fight childhood hunger, especially during the summer. Today children in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties can get free breakfast or lunch as part of the summer lunch program. Every year the program helps thousands of students who rely on school meals. Children ages one to 18 can get free meals Monday through Friday at several locations. This runs throughout summer. Breakfast and lunch is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Families tell us without programs like this they might not get to give their kids healthy lunches all week.

Juliana Griego: This saves a lot of money coming here every day. That’s the whole lunch meal that I don’t have to provide.

Renee Walters: For some kids this is the only meal they’re going to get today, so I feel like it’s very important.

Sasha: The summer lunch program begins today in Bernalillo County and runs until August 4. Children in Rio Rancho can get free summer meals now until August 11. Days vary for the summer lunch program in Santa Fe. For a full list of locations and times, visit our website, koat.com.
