ALBUQUERQUE—New Mexico Voices for Children issued the following statement from executive director James Jimenez regarding Governor Martinez’s agreement to call a special legislative session:

“Closed-door deals aren’t in the public’s interest. And quick ‘solutions’ that fail to promote long-term public investment don’t serve New Mexicans.

“For New Mexico’s communities to thrive, we need the resources for good schools, roads and other infrastructure, and safe neighborhoods. Years of tax cuts that mostly benefit the wealthiest have taken away our ability to make the investments needed for broad prosperity. Some of those tax cuts also took place in closed-door rushed fashion.

“Let’s take the time to do this right. We face a choice: invest in what helps our communities thrive by closing tax loopholes for the powerful few or watch New Mexicans’ hopes for the future sink.”
