Nominee Statement:

When my work, whatever it may be, brings joy to myself and others, then it it worth it.

Biography

When I was three years old my family moved into a house with another family. We have co-housed for more that ten years now. I have also been home schooled with my "adopted" extra family members for ten years. My "brothers" and I collected old stuff from people in our neighborhood for a garage sale to help raise money for the Save the Children Organization that helps stop child labor all over the world. We raised about $2,000. Over the years we have also had garage sales to benefit Manatees, Sea Turtles and Bangle Tigers, raising equal amounts to the first benefit garage sale. My family for years worked with "Food not Bombs," helping to bring food to homeless people. We would get up early on Sunday mornings and go dumpster diving, to find great food. It's amazing what people throw away. We helped to cut and cook the food, and then in the afternoons we would set up tables downtown. After serving the people, we would eat lunch with the homeless men, woman and children.

A year and a half ago I joined the Children's Hour crew. I pick music during the week and then come up to KUNM 89.9 FM radio station at 8:30 on Saturday mornings to help do the show. I have enjoyed volunteering there so much. I love that people enjoy what we can bring to them.

I have also volunteered every Monday morning for about an hour for a year and a half working with Hershel Weiss (a local wood worker) on two doors for Nahalat Shalom (a Jewish synagogue). These doors have become wonderful symbols of unity and friendship for me. This January when the doors were hung people of all faiths gathered to bless them in their new home. It was a great project.
