2007 Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Award Nominee

Nicola Martinez

Prewitt, New Mexico

Nominee Statement:

To whom great things are given, great things are expected.

Biography

My whole name is Nicola Marion Martinez. I am a 19 year old Navajo traditionalist. I grew up in a household of seven. My parents have both graduated high school, and my oldest sister was the first to receive a college degree. During high school I was thought of as very active, and during my first year of college I was in search of change, as I have never traveled or was a social sort. I wondered many things, among them was why are there so many young wandering aimlessly without the guidance of their parents? Did this have to to be? Why? Although I have not found the answers to most of my concerns, I have at least found a way to create change.

I have learned it is best to "grow where you are planted". I grew up in the outskirts of the Navajo reservation - checker board area - on my great grandparents' land - a place called Haystack, New Mexico. My great grandfather is recognized for igniting the uranium boom in Grants. I have high hopes for the future and hope to hold up the honor thatcomes with having the family name. I have been recognized for many accomplishments in my short life, but none compare to that of my elders.

This is who I am - Navajo. This is what I stand for - Family. And this is what I dream of - Life.
