Biography

I come from Taos, New Mexico, a small Indo-Hispanic community overlaid with contrasting lifestyles of outside wealth and tourism - ski and art. I was shaped by this community and the values of my home.

My mother spoke only Spanish, until a one-room school had her speak English or be punished. My father came from California where Spanish speakers were considered low class. Now my English is enriched by Spanish, but my Spanish fluency suffers. My home is family centered with unity and identity. My extended family is iust a shout across the fields; gatherings including multi-generations are frequent, often without a reason to celebrate. An impromptu gathering can bring a crowd with a few calls. The after dinner talk can wander for hours. And if a family member needs help, all that is needed is for others to know.

After leaving public elementary school and entering a charter school, I found the world of the dominant culture. Many classmates came from homes so different from mine. I was surrounded by harsh competitiveness, selfish independence and unruly "free thinking". This stereotyping was seen through the emotions of a preteen, but it gave me appreciation for my heritage and my religion.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a framework was added: A sense of life's purpose, a need for progression, and an attitude of perfecting has strengthened me with clear direction. This structure is clearly seen in my musical avocation. Piano lessons and music school developed my skills so that now I perfect my talents as I sing and play the violin in Mariachi or audition and perform in All-State Chorus.

I trace my progression from my Hispanic home, the values fostered by my parents, and the teachings of my church.
