2007 Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Award Nominee

Corey De La Cruz

Alamogordo, New Mexico

Nominee Statement:

My volunteer work is important to me because,no matter how big or small the project or how many people mightor might not know that I helped, inside I know that I have made some difference in my community.

Biography

My name is Corey De La Cruz. I am 17 years old, and I have lived in Alamorgordo, New Mexico all my life.

In the past few years, I have performed community service with many different organizations. These services include setting up and taking down booths at the Immaculate Conception church fiestas as well as serving in the booths during the fiestas. I also volunteered for the 2005 and 2006 Gus Macker Basketball Tournaments, during which I helped register contestants for the events. These tournaments were not related to school athletics. Instead, they were part of a community youth program.

I also volunteered for the Juvenile Drug Court in Alamogordo in 2005 and 2006. Specifically, I performed various community service tasks to assist the elderly and disabled with the City of Alamogordo's Code Enforcement Department.

After Hurricane Katrina, a number of dispossessed families from New Orleans came here to Alamogordo. I spent several days at the Bette Dare Good Samaritan Center cleaning out twelve rooms to provide housing for these families.

Here in Alamogordo, there were two floods last summer. Again, some families lost their homes and most of their possessions. I volunteered to help fill sandbags at the Casa Arena Nursing Home to help protect the residents there.

Most recently, I volunteered to be a reader for special education children at the Alamogordo Public Schools.

I consider myself to be an outgoing person, and I enjoy helping in my community because these experiences have allowed me to make new friends.
