2007 Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Award Nominee

Mercedes Bell

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Nominee Statement:

My volunteer work is important to me because I am able to help people and be a good role model to others.

Biography

Born in Portales, New Mexico, I moved to Albuquerque seven years ago
with my mother and father. At the age of 12 I began to volunteer in YMCA childcare programs, my church; the community, and school.
The YMCA of Central New Mexico is where I spend most of my volunteer .
time. Every Friday for the last two years I have read stories, give snacks, help with home work, play games, and do arts and crafts with preschoolers and before and after schoolers. I also assist with field trips and health fairs in the summer (Kid3 Fair/NM Health Fair/Balloon Fiesta Park/Healthy Kids Day/Summer Fest). After planning and getting together volunteer models for my first fashion show at the age of 13, which debuted my personal designs, I was asked to do public speaking to encourage young people to follow their dreams. The first time I did so was at the YMCA Teen Day Camp. Since then I have had two other presentations. In 2006 I was named the YMCA Teen Volunteer of the Year.

At my local church, I teach the little children's class, ages 5-9 and help them learn routines for the junior step team. When the elderly mothers need assistance I always make sure I am available for them, I never go one service without giving them a hug. The church's Young People Willing Worker of the Year award was given to me in 2003, 2004, and 2005.

In 2005 I volunteered with the Miss New Mexico USA Pageantry. Since I will not be old enough to compete until 2008, I encouraged young women behind the scenes to have a winning attitude and assisted them in etiquette and stage presence. I also helped them with their personal items and schedule of events.

As a fifth grader I was a youth mediator and from the sixth grade till now, eighth grade, I continue to serve my fellow students as a class representative. This year I lead efforts in a school food and toy drive for children and families who needed help during the holiday season.
