2007 Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Award Nominee

Santiago Archuleta

Peralta, New Mexico

Nominee Statement:

My volunteer work is not really important to me because I don't acknowledge it as volunteer work, but instread as doing something nice, I was raised to serve others, and I consider this the right thing to do in life.

Biography

My name is Santiago Archuleta, and I am 17 years old and a senior at Los Lunas high school. I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I moved to Peralta, New Mexico when I was 10 years old. I am currently in a relationship with a beautiful girl name Erica. I have a loving family that has raised me to be good decent person. I hope to pursue a career in the film industry as a director after attending college at both UNM and the College of Santa Fe. I attend the Queen of Heaven high school youth group and I have participated in several youth retreats at the parish. I have helped as a team leader in my youth group. I have helped to set up, prepare food and serve for the adult retreats at Queen of Heaven. I have baby-sat for the Queen of Heaven Adult prayer group, so members can attend, during the last year and half. I have helped with blanket, clothes and food drives for the homeless with my youth group. I also helped collect and wrap gifts for needy children during the Holiday season.

I was nominated for this scholarship by Kristina Valtierra. The reason I was nominated greatly eludes me. My best guess would be that Ms. Valtierra considers me a decent volunteer. I would technically be considered a volunteer, but in my own opinion I am not. The "volunteer" work that I do is just me being nice and helping out. Everyone
needs help once in awhile and I figure "Why not, me? I can help." It is all a matter of ersonal opinion about someone to consider another a volunteer. In my opinion, I am not a volunteer. But, instead someone that helps others when help is needed and anticipates nothing in return.
