Speaking Up for Children, Shaping Public Policy, Strengthening New Mexico Families
We work to eliminate child poverty and improve
the health and well–being of New Mexico's children, families and communities.
Founded in 1987 by a group
of pediatricians, New Mexico Voices for Children (NM Voices) is a progressive, nonpartisan,
statewide advocacy organization. To accomplish our mission, we work with state and national officials to
shape and implement public policies that are supportive of children and working families.
Because we believe in evidence–based advocacy, we conduct
rigorous research and data analysis. NM Voices is the only nonprofit child advocacy
organization in the state examining tax and budget policy issues specific to the
needs of the poor. We also train young people and their communities to advocate on the issues that affect them.
In 2007, we released our vision for the next 20 years: the New Mexico Children's Charter.
NM Voices is guided by four
- Human
Rights That everyone has the right to racial, ethnic and gender equality
- Healthy Communities That everyone has the right
to affordable health care, quality education, and safe neighborhoods
- Economic
Justice That everyone has the right to economic opportunity and prosperity
- Civic Participation That everyone's voice
has a place within our government
- We conduct research and
data analysis through our Fiscal
Policy Project.
- We use our research and publications to educate and inform
policymakers, the news media, and the public.
Communities and other organizations use our research to advocate for their specific
needs.
- We identify and advocate for innovative public policies to improve
the lives of New Mexico's children.
- We work both at grassroots and governmental
levels, often in coalition with other advocacy organizations, business leaders,
community groups, and the faith community.
- We reach out to and educate
the community through various programs and initiatives around the state.
We all come from families. Families are big, small, extended, nuclear, multi–generational, with one parent, two parents or grandparents. We live under one roof or many. A family can be as temporary as weeks, as permanent as forever. We become part of a family by birth, adoption, marriage, or from a desire for mutual support. As family members, we nurture, protect and influence each other. A family is a culture unto itself, with different values and unique ways of realizing its dreams; together, our families become the source of our rich cultural and spiritual diversity. Each family has strengths and qualities that flow from individual members and from the family as a unit. Our families create neighborhoods, communities, states, and nations.
